3. Offline Functionality & Local Data Storage

3.1 Offline-First Design

Naam Jaap is designed with an offline-first architecture. All core features work fully without an internet connection:

  • Chanting & Counting: All mantra counts and durations are stored locally on your device immediately — no internet connection is required.
  • Progress & Statistics: Charts and summaries are computed entirely from data stored on your device.
  • Reminders: Scheduled via Android's alarm system and fire on time even without internet.
  • Settings: All preferences (haptic feedback, sound, theme, language) are saved locally on your device.
  • Guest Mode: You can use the full app without creating an account or connecting to the internet.

3.2 Local Data Storage

Your data is stored on your device using the following technologies:

StorageDataSecurity
SQLite DatabaseChanting counts, durations, jaap configurations, reminders, achievementsStored in the app's private sandbox, inaccessible to other apps
MMKV Key-Value StoreApp preferences, onboarding state, selected jaap, languageStored in app's private sandbox
Encrypted MMKVAuthentication tokens (JWT)Encrypted with a randomly generated AES-256 key
Device FilesystemCached preset mantra imagesStored in app's private document directory

All local data remains on your device until you choose to delete your account.

4. Cloud Sync (Optional)

If you create an account and are connected to the internet, your data is synced to our secure servers to enable cross-device access and backup:

4.1 Data Synced to Our Servers

  • Chanting counts and durations
  • Jaap (mantra) configurations and daily targets
  • Reminder schedules and settings
  • Profile information (name, phone number, profile photo)

4.2 How Sync Works

  • Data is always saved locally on your device first.
  • When an internet connection is available, locally modified data is pushed to our servers.
  • If you are offline, changes are queued and automatically synced when connectivity is restored.
  • A periodic sync occurs approximately every 30 minutes when the app is active and connected.
  • You can also manually trigger a sync from the Settings screen.
